Mrs. Volkmann, Lower School Art Teacher, will be exhibiting her new paintings and sculptures at Reis Studios in conjunction with Long Island City Arts Open Studios Weekend on May 19th and 20th.  This annual event invites more than 150 local artists to share their groundbreaking, creative artistry with the public.  Mrs. Volkmann will feature her signature mixed-media wall reliefs as well as her abstract portraiture.

Like many of the Buckley boys she teaches, Mrs. Volkmann unearthed her passion for art at an early age.  She studied painting and art education at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and earned a fellowship to study at the Yale Summer School of Music and Art in 1990.  Inspired by Michelangelo, Mrs. Volkmann has always been drawn to the figure; her work aims to reflect her subject’s inner emotions.  She is particularly excited about her recent pieces in sculpture, the crafting of which involves mounting old tea boxes to foam board and threading wire through them to create an expressive, three-dimensional property full of tension and weight.  The Buckley community is lucky to have such a talented artist in our midst!
